Penonom\u00e9, October 04, 2024- With the aim of reaffirming its commitment to the environment and contributing to the development of sustainable tourism, Cobre Panama participated in the IV International Congress on Sustainable Tourism \u201cPanama is Biodiversity, Culture and Development\u201d, organized by the Foundation for the Integral Tourism Development of the Province of Cocl\u00e9 (FUDETURISCO). <\/p>\n
For Mar\u00eda Elena Almengor, president of the Foundation for the Integral Tourist Development of the Province of Cocl\u00e9 (FUDETURISCO), this IV Congress represents the meeting point to raise important issues in the development of sustainable tourism”. <\/p>\n
The international speaker, Carlos Pe\u00f1a, opened the Congress with the presentation \u201cMining and Tourism\u201d, where he highlighted how both activities can develop and complement each other, presenting success stories, such as the Dominican Republic, and the opportunities for collaboration to promote tourism in mining areas. <\/p>\n
Zorel Morales, executive director of the Mining Chamber of Panama, presented the country’s vision of the mining sector. Morales emphasized the significant contribution that mining makes to the economic, environmental and social axes of sustainable development. \u201cWe have to put on the scale and analyze the opportunity cost of closing the mine and eliminating the enormous national asset of
\ncopper minerals that our country has\u201d, he concluded. <\/p>\n
During the Panel \u201cHow Responsible Mining can boost Tourism Development in Panama\u201d, Maru Galvez, spokesperson for Cobre Panama, shared with those present the Cobre Conecta Program and how responsible mining can be an engine for tourism and economic development in Panama. \u201cBy joining efforts it is possible to promote sustainable tourism in areas rich in natural resources,\u201d said G\u00e1lvez. <\/p>\n
In addition, Jonatan Montenegro, Cobre Panama’s environmental advisor, presented the \u201cPreservation and Safe Management Plan: Current Situation of Cobre Panama\u201d, where he explained the activities that are being carried out to guarantee the physical and chemical stability of the mine. <\/p>\n
